North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College for Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. The North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1978. It admitted its first class of DVM students in August 1981, dedicated its main facility in April 1983, and graduated its first class of veterinarians in May 1985. In addition to its academic program, the college provides on-site continuing education and outreach programs for more than 4,000 clients annually.
